Park-and-Ride Wheel Wash in Oxford
The operation of the new Oxford Park-and-Ride wheel wash station is a leading example of proactive project management, showcasing the benefits of close collaboration between contractors and solution providers.
The 850-space Park-and-Ride facility in North-West Eynsham, set on the outskirts of Oxford, will help to reduce congestion on the A40 and allow the construction of thousands of new homes.
Providing the best wheel washing solution
Wheelwash was appointed to design, build, install and maintain a vehicle wheel cleaning solution that would ensure muck-away vehicles were thoroughly cleaned before leaving the site.
Wheelwash Head of Sales Alison Galley specified a 6m Ecowash Extra. She said: “The Ecowash range features a closed-loop water recycling design that ensures no water is wasted, while also being highly effective in preventing contaminants from entering the surrounding environment.”
She added: “During the planning phase, the Wheelwash team worked closely with the site to ensure that the system was installed in the optimum position, and that traffic flow through the site was optimised for safety and performance. The wheel wash sits adjacent to a supplementary haul lane that ensures the site is always operational. Wheelwash also supplied boot wash facilities to ensure that the welfare cabins were kept clean and dirt-free, reducing the risk of slips.”

The project has been reported as ‘outstanding’ by site visitors on LinkedIn.
Peiter Fowkes, Project Manager for Balfour Beatty, praised the level of planning and care taken to manage the complex site requirements.
In a LinkedIn post, Peiter noted that everything had been thought of, including automatic wheel washers for the muckaway wagons, boot wash facilities, supplementary haul lanes, and excellent phasing of the works.
